STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAU) – An Amherst man has pled no contest to setting his house on fire last year.
Jason Kindler faces up to 40 years in prison when he’s sentenced in late February.
The 34-year-old told his brother he started the blaze by opening up the liquid propane line to his water heater. Family members say Kindler had just lost his job, was having financial trouble and had considered suicide.
In addition to arson, Kindler was also charged with recklessly endangering safety because the fire caused the floor to collapse sooner than in most blazes. Fire officials say that put the six firefighters who went into the house at a greater risk of injury or death.
