KALAMAZOO--Jury deliberations got off to a late start this morning in the Springer murder trial.

An alternate juror had to be called in shortly after 9 to relieve a member who left for an undisclosed emergency.

Just before lunch recess, the jury requested to review seven previously recorded testimonies, including father Tony Springer and two Child Protective Services case workers, Cindy Bare and Patricia Skelding.

The 12 jury members have also requested to see five evidence exhibits, including the chain that kept Calista to her bed the night of the fatal fire.

This could significantly slow deliberations, as Judge Paul Stutsman instructed before the weekend break, that testimony can only be re-played in full and not sections. Mr. Springer's testimony alone neared four hours.
