MERRIMAC, Wis. (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s only free car ferry is back on the water. The Merrimac Ferry takes traffic over the Wisconsin River on Highway 113 between Merrimac in Sauk County and Okee in Columbia County. The state DOT runs the boat known as the “Colsac Three.” It holds 15 vehicles at a time plus bicycles and pedestrians. It goes 24-7, and it’s been a free ride for folks since 1933. The Merrimac Ferry closed for the winter last December 10th. It re-opened about this time last year. In 2008, it didn’t get going until early April. But in ’07, unseasonably warm temperatures had the ferry running in January.
