SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WTAQ) - A Sheboygan police officer shot and killed a man overnight during a routine traffic stop.

Chief Chris Domagalski said the officer stopped a 52-year-old Two Rivers man for speeding about 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The chief said the driver got of his car with a hand behind his back and rejected the officer’s commands. So the 30-year-old officer used a Taser stun gun, but it had no effect. Domagalski said the Two Rivers man had pulled out a handgun and threatened the officer, who responded by shooting twice.

The man died a short time later at a Sheboygan hospital. The officer was a 7-year veteran of the Sheboygan police force. Domagalski said the offending driver had an extensive criminal record, and was currently on supervision from a case in 1999.

The shooting incident remains under investigation.
