GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin has the highest drunk driving rate in the nation and the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will have law enforcement agencies hitting the roads looking for drunk drivers.

The public education and high visibility campaign runs through September 5th and is part of nationwide effort.  It is made possible by a $200,000 grant.  Ads have been playing on local TV markets and printed on billboards.

“We are trying to take these people off the roads before they hurt our friends and loved ones.”  Said Regional Program Manager for Michael Panosh with the Department of Transportation

Panosh says they are not target the person who has a couple drink throughout the night, they are focused on drunk drivers that are two or three times the legal limit.

“When they get behind that wheel, they’re operating what amounts to a 2,000 pound speeding bullet, and it’s just a matter of when not if.”

Last year alcohol related crashes killed 220 people there were nearly 40,000 convictions for drunk driving.
