2012 Olympics: Casting the Movie Version

By Kelsea Stahler, Hollywood.com Staff

We've spent almost two weeks watching their every move and now, the London Olympians have officially become stars in their own right. But with any great Olympic story comes the desire to craft an sweeping, triumphant tale for the big screen. And wouldn't you know it, we've got the casting list all set. You're welcome, Hollywood.

John Krasinski as Michael Phelps

Who better to take on America's favorite swimmer and all-around likeable guy than The Office's beloved, lovably goofy Jim Halpert? He's got the height and the penchant for grinning, and just like Phelps, everybody loves John Krasinski. Let's just hope he doesn't need arm floaties to get around in the pool.

Next: Jordyn Wieber Get Gleeked.[PAGEBREAK]Lea Michele as Jordyn Weiber

There's no one who truly resembles Wieber, but Michele has a few of the right facial features. Besides, she knows what it's like to play a girl who's poised to rise to the top and more importantly, she knows how important a good cry is when that goal proves to be just out of reach. It would be perfect, as long as Michele doesn't try to perform a song about the glory of Jordyn's trusty leotard. No one needs to hear the unfortunate follow-up to "My Headband."

Next: Who Could Match Missy Franklin's Gracious Joy?[PAGEBREAK]Greta Gerwig as Missy Franklin

How can you not love Missy Franklin? The answer is: you can't. The gold medalist and newly crowned swimming star is easy to root for and easy to love. She's also without much of the bravado that most Olympic stars exhibit, always sporting the appearance that she's happy to be there, doing her thing. Lovable and down-to-earth indie actress Greta Gerwig could not be more perfect.

Next: Gabby's Million Dollar Smile Goes Hollywood[PAGEBREAK]Keke Palmer as Gabby Douglas

Let's think. Who could play the incredibly talented, wonderfully bubbly young gymnast? Why not an equally bubbly, talented young actress - and one of the only girls with a smile sparkling enough to compare to Gabby's now-famous grin? Palmer could certainly do justice the pint-sized athlete.

Next: Which Parks and Rec Star Could Take on Lolo Jones?[PAGEBREAK]Rashida Jones as Lolo Jones

Lolo's had a rough go in these 2012 games. She been popularized for her fantastic figure and her choice to remain a virgin until age 30, but she's also been criticized for obtaining fame through a means other than athletic performance. It's been so rough, the girl broke down on national television, and our hearts collectively broke. Rashida Jones has the emotional capacity and lovable nature necessary to convey the tortuous little tale. Plus, what girl wouldn't want to be played by Rashida in a movie? (No girl.)

Next: Can This Party Down Alum Handle Peeing in the Pool?[PAGEBREAK]Ryan Hansen as Ryan Lochte

Get past the double Ryans thing. There's more to this pairing. Ryan Hansen has made every penny he's ever earned on screen by playing the incredibly attractive, adorable giant ditz. Lochte has maintained his London fame by doing the exact same thing, only in Lochte's case, the ditziness is real. No one could bring the lovable dufus to screen quite like the master: Mr. Hansen. There's one small snag: Hansen's ability to pee in a pool without feeling remorse is still undetermined.

Next: Aly Raisman's Parents Are Comedy Gold[PAGEBREAK]Debra Messing and David Strathairn as Aly Raisman's Parents

If we learned anything from watching every season of Will and Grace, it's that Debra Messing is an amazingly strange comedic actress. The wild faces/dances/pantomimes her character exhibited throughout the series make her a perfect match to reenact Mama Raisman's now famous rollercoaster ride of a reaction to her daughter's performance on the uneven bars. As for David Strathairn, he could keep up with Messing and if he isn't a movie star version of Aly's dad, I'm not sure anyone is.

Next: Hopefully This Actress Is to McKayla Maroney's Liking...[PAGEBREAK]Juno Temple as McKayla Maroney

Everyone agrees that McKayla Maroney bears an uncanny resemblance to the most famous footballer's wife, Posh Spice Victoria Beckham. However, Posh is just a little out of the age range to play a spritely, young gymnast. Instead, relative newbie - and someone you may recognize from her small part in The Dark Knight Rises - Juno Temple could handle the role. She doesn't always master the "McKayla is Not Impressed" meme face, but she sure can get there when she needs to. Plus, Temple's got more than enough sass to make up for it.
